Halo Reach's technical improvements weren't driven by what rival first-person shooters are doing, Bungie community man Brian Jarrard has told CVG.
Jarrard pointed to Bungie's "incredibly talented" engineers and "great understanding" of the Xbox 360 hardware as reasons for the jump in graphical quality since Halo 3.
According to the Bungie chap however, the motivation for the engine overhaul was simply to achieve the vision the studio set out for Reach.
"The major technological investments and overhaul to the Reach engine weren't really driven by competition or the marketplace but more so because it was _required_ to achieve the vision the team had for the project in terms of the scope and scale and experiences we were aiming for," he said.
"None of this would've been possible without significant improvements to our base technology."
He added: "We have a great understanding and familiarity with the Xbox 360 hardware now, we have incredibly talented engineers and artists and during pre-production great plans were built and smart specs were written to help the entire project reach the bar we set out to hit nearly three years ago."
And according to those who've played through Reach, it really does look fantastic. GamesMaster magazine called the shooter 'more fluid than Gears Of War'.
